Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, is a vibrant Bollywood treat that fulfills all the quintessential expectations. Set against ginormous backdrops, the movie brims with colors, emotions, family bonds, and songs, all wrapped in snowy settings that add to the enchantment.
In the world of stereotypes, we encounter the flamboyant Punjabi Randhawa family residing in a flashy mansion in Karol Bagh. Here, Ranveer Singh shines as Rocky, a lively, crass, and endearing character, but one who bows down to the firm rule of his grandmother Dhanalakshmi (Jaya Bachchan), the matriarch and wealth-holder of the household. The family dynamic revolves around tradition, with Tijori (Aamir Bashir), Rocky’s father, upholding patriarchal values, while Poornima (Kshitee Jog), Rocky’s mother, plays the typical role of a submissive homemaker. Amidst this, Gayatri (Anjali Anand) faces body-shaming and ridicule due to her weight, and grandpa Randhawa (Dharmendra) remains a distant figure.
Contrasting these stereotypes are the intellectual and liberal Bengali Chatterjees from Chittaranjan Park. Alia Bhatt shines as Rani, a spirited LSR-Columbia University graduate, and a fearless media personality who confronts leaders on sensitive issues. Her parents, Anjali (Churni Ganguly), an English professor, and Chandan (Tota Roy Chowdhury), a Kathak dancer, reflect the cultured and educated aspect of their background. Shabana Azmi portrays the elegant grandma Chatterjee, Jamini, with finesse.
Amidst all the drama, a unique romance unfurls between Rocky and Rani. Interestingly, their grandparents, Randhawa and Chatterjee, had an affair in the ’70s, rekindling their relationship through the course of the film. Ranveer and Alia’s chemistry adds a natural and comfortable charm to their on-screen relationship.
The movie showcases gorgeous visuals, with Alia’s stunning appearances in chiffon sarees leaving a lasting impact. While the performances, especially by Churni and Tota, captivate the audience, melodrama, a trademark of KJo’s movies, creeps in during the second half, bringing emotional moments that resonate strongly.
Surprisingly, beneath the glitz and drama, the film delivers relevant messages. It takes a stand against patriarchy and promotes feminism through engaging scenes and dialogues. Furthermore, the movie addresses racism and challenges stereotypes, emphasizing progressive themes.
Despite its flaws and slightly extended duration, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani emerges as a sweet and enjoyable film, offering a welcome respite from KJo’s previous endeavors.
