Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is preparing to launch multiple electric vehicle (EV) models in the Indian market. The first model, an electric scooter, is expected to debut in March 2022, according to the company’s Managing Director, President and CEO, Atsushi Ogata.
The company is also developing charging infrastructure to support its EV customers. HMSI, which currently holds a 56% market share in the scooter segment, is also seeking to solidify its position in the motorcycle segment with the introduction of a 100cc bike next month, targeting the rural and semi-urban markets.
The first EV model, set to launch in March 2022, will feature a fixed battery, while the second model will come with a swappable battery system, Ogata said. The company also plans to utilize its existing sales infrastructure of over 6,000 outlets to set up charging infrastructure for its EV range and later depending on the market situation would take a call on expanding it further.
HMSI is a little late to the EV game in comparison to its competition, but Ogata noted that the company has been focusing on “making the company’s constitution strong in the last three years”. It is now ready to take on the challenge of the EV market in India with the introduction of its first model in March 2022.
