“Rani Mukerji shares admiration for Yash Chopra’s portrayal of heroines in popular docu-series on Netflix”
Rani Mukerji, a prominent Bollywood actor, expressed her appreciation for the way Yash Chopra presented heroines in his films, especially in “Chandni” and “Lamhe,” which were her favourite movies growing up. Yash Chopra’s contribution to Hindi cinema in the last five decades has been celebrated in a popular Netflix docu-series titled “The Romantics,” which takes viewers behind the scenes of the Yash Raj Films studio, its movies, and the filmmaker’s influence on Indian cinema. The actor, who is married to Aditya Chopra, Yash Chopra’s son and the CEO of Yash Raj Films, said she feels fortunate to have known him not only as a filmmaker but also as a father-in-law.
Mukerji recalled the images of women in white chiffon sarees framed against the backdrop of snow-covered mountains that were part of Yash Chopra’s movies and were engraved in her mind since childhood. She also praised Chopra for creating aspirational characters that were also believable, with roles for women that were equal to or even better than those for men. The actor credited Chopra’s wife, Pamela Chopra, for influencing him to write such beautiful parts for women.
The Netflix docu-series “The Romantics” features 35 leading personalities from the Indian film industry who have closely worked with Yash Raj Films. Mukerji also features in the series, which became the top trending title on Netflix within 48 hours of its release. The actor shared her admiration for Chopra’s presentation of heroines on screen and revealed that she had always secretly wished to be the quintessential “Yash Chopra heroine.”
Mukerji also praised Chopra’s down-to-earth, humble, and respectful nature, describing him as a jovial person with a great sense of humour who was always the favourite person at any get-together or function. The actor appreciated Chopra’s immense respect for women, which always showed in the way he presented his heroines.
“The Romantics” has been directed by Smriti Mundhra of “Indian Matchmaking” fame and features a rare interview with Aditya Chopra. The docu-series takes viewers on a journey through the history of Yash Raj Films, from its inception in 1970 to its current position as one of the most prominent production houses in India.
